The deer is a ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae. Ruminant means “to chew over again” The male is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn.
Oliver Goldsmith, was a novelist, poet and journalist as well as the author of many works of natural history. He is now best known for his 1766 novel, The Vicar of Wakefield.
This colourful engraving is from Oliver Goldsmith’s “History of the Earth and Animated Nature” Published by Archibald Fullerton 1855.
