Antique Map, Americas, L’Amerique Dressee pour l’Etude de la Geographie, 1786

Very decorative, hand coloured map of North and South America.  The Pacific North West is labelled Albion, and the Apache tribe is noted. Texas is called ‘Nouvelle Mexique’ a Northwest Passage extends through a series of lakes to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There are 16 sailing ships distributed on the seas.
This ornate map has an interesting cartouche, and a decorative border.
Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823) was the Cartographer Royal to the King of France, his official title being “Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi”. Despite a prolific cartographic career and several important atlases to his name, little is actually known of his life and career. What is known is that much of his work was produced in collaboration with Danish royal Cartographer Louis Charles Desno Louis Brion de la Tour, geographer to the King.
