About Capt. John Ross the explorer.

Captain John Ross R.N. (1777 -1856) was a British naval officer and Arctic explorer. In this second expedition to find the North West passage, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, the North Magnetic Pole was located.
He surveyed the Gulf of Boothia and King William Island. The ship was crushed in the ice, and John Ross and his men had to be rescued  the following summer by a Whaler. He was knighted in 1834 and became a rear admiral in 1851. He published a number of works.
