Sigeth or Szigetvar played an important part in the battle of the Ottoman Empire led by Suleiman, against the Hapsburg Monarchy in 1566. Although the battle was an Ottoman victory, there were heavy losses on both sides. It is described as "the battle that saved civilisation" as it stopped the Ottoman push to Vienna that year. Vienna was not threatened again until 1683.
