Die Stadt Cusco 1684.
Cusco, was the religious and administrative capital of the Inca Empire, which flourished in ancient Peru between c. 1400 and 1534. The location of the city is on an ancient glacier lake bed. The basin lies at an altitude of 3,450 metres and is surrounded by mountain peaks, as can be seen in the illustration.
The Copper plate, hand coloured engraving, is from the German Edition of “Description de l’Universe 1684.” The book is by Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706).
Mallet was a French Cartographer and Engineer, and also an Inspector of Fortifications. Because of his background, he was appointed to teach Mathematics at the Court of Louis XlV. Most of the illustrations for the engravings were done by him.
