This was a sacred site of the native American Monacan Tribe. There is a figure standing on the rock in the water at the bottom of the arch and a couple more watching. It has been a very popular tourist attraction from the 18th century. This is an original steel engraving from “American Scenery by N.P.Willis Esq. Illustrated by W.H. Bartlett” engraved by J.C.Armytage, Published for the Proprietors by George Virtue, 1839.
