Claudius Ptolemy was a Greek writer, known as a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet. This engraving is based on the description contained in Ptolemy’s book of Geography. He was the first to use longitudinal and latitudinal lines as well as specifying terrestrial locations by celestial observations.Ptolemy’s map of the known world in the 2nd century.
Heinrich Kiepert (1818-1899)was one of the more important scholarly cartographers of the second half of the 19th century. One of his interests was the historical geography of the classical world, of which this is an example.
