Two very vivid, interesting illustrations of crabs, hand coloured on handmade thick, uncut paper.
The engravings are from “Tableau Encyclopedique et methodique des trois regnes de la nature” published by Charles Joseph Panckoucke c.1790.
The Encyclopedia was printed during the time of the French Revolution and was written by the most knowledgeable French writers and scholars of the time.
This section was edited by Jean-Guillaume Bruguiere and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. The engraving is by Jacques de Seve who worked for Buffon. The Encyclopedia was extremely popular, and was copied a great many number of times.
