Mulld-Sake, Chimney Sweep, 1794.
Portrait of the Chimney Sweep, John Cottington, carrying the tools of his trade. The long brush is over his shoulder, and the background is of a London street scene circa 1616.
This wonderful engraving, by Renold Elstrack, has an inscription underneath with 8 lines of verse. There are also 7 pages of the Memoirs of John Cottington from “Remarkable Persons” published by Caulfield and Herbert, 1794. Renold Elstrack (1570 – c.1625) was one of the earliest native engravers in England and this is a fine example of his rare and sought-after work.
Size 20 x 28 cm. Condition Good.
