She was intended as a sailing vessel, but in 1851 with of the adoption of the screw propeller provided the navy with a steam-driven naval power. This was the flagship of the fleet of Vice- Admiral Sir Charles Napier and served as his flagship throughout the Baltic campaign of 1854.
