Coloured steel engraving of Van Diemens Land, officially renamed Tasmania in 1855. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman had innocently bestowed this name to honour, a powerful figure in his world, Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. However, the name became synonymous with a convict hell.
Drawn and engraved by Alex. Findlay, Published by Thomas Kelly, 1841.
