J.G.Bartholomew was credited with having pioneered the use of hypsometric tints or layer colouring in maps. This map is coloured showing the vegetation and Ocean Currents and Monsoon Drifts, of different parts of the world with an explanation of the colouring i.e.Forrest, Woodland, Steppe, desert Tundra. The inset diagrams at the top and bottom show the vertical distribution of vegetation in Europe, The Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia and New Zealand.
This map is from a special edition of “The Times Survey Atlas and Gazetteer of the World ” dedicated to King George V. by His Majesty’s Cartographer, J.G.Bartholomew, dated 1922.
